Arizona: Hero or Villain
Ultimately, the courts decision regarding the constitutionality of the new Arizona anti-immigration law filed in a lawsuit by the Obama Justice Department will assuredly impact our country. It is difficult for many Americans to relate to the seemingly illogical reasoning of the government's claim of Arizona usurping their authority. They did not mention the complaint expressed so often by the opposition prior to the lawsuit, that racial profiling will ensue if Arizona prevails. And those sentiments are still expressed often in media discussions and sound bites. It is difficult to muster up sympathy for the government's claims, because we are often required to prove our identity in the course of our daily activities (see below, some could add a few additions to those listed). Unless you live there, it is difficult for others to tell the people of Arizona what they should, or should not do to remedy their dilemma. The government has clearly been grossly negligent in helping to enforce the federal law, which mirrors the new Arizona policy. 70% of Arizonians and 60% of the American people support this law; this is a significant number which speaks volumes. Perhaps, it would be prudent to see if the law achieves the goal for which it was written, and then one can judge it fairly. If the law proves to be unjust, I would pray that Arizona would do the right thing and repeal it.
Legal American citizens must show ID when:
Pulled over by the police.
Making purchases on my department store credit card.
When I show up for a doctor's appointment.
When filling out a credit card or loan application.
When applying for or renewing a driver's license or passport.
When applying for any kind of insurance.
When filling out college applications.
When donating blood.
When obtaining certain prescription drugs.
When making some debit purchases, especially, if I'm out of state.
When collecting a boarding pass for airline or train travel.
Cashing or paying by check at a store or bank.
I'm sure there are more instances, but the point is that we citizens of the USA are required to prove who we are nearly every day!
